Hacktoberfest!

Brinck Slattery • Oct 1 2018

(For CURRENT_YEAR's Hacktoberfest announcement, please visit lbry.com/hacktoberfest)

The leaves are starting to fall, and that means it's time for Hackoberfest! Thanks to DigitalOcean's hard work, newbies and seasoned open source developers alike have a unique opportunity to solve new and challenging problems and bugs all through the month of October (and earn some recognition and a free t-shirt in the process).

Open source is (literally) part of our DNA here at LBRY, and we're always happy when we get an opportunity to support our fellow open source projects. Throughout the month of October, our developers will be hosting informational sessions, meetups, and coding projects to introduce other programmers to the world of open source software and start making contributions immediately.

Additionally, we're using this month to:

  • Do an alpha launch of lbry.tech
  • Revitalize our technical community, including a new forum
  • Offer sweet rewards to contributors new and old
  • Give back to other open-source projects

Ready to get involved?

A full schedule of events is below. As videos get published, this post will be updated with links.

However, you don't need to wait! Our contributor guide and lbry.tech are ready for you to get started today. You can also join us on Discord or our forum to interact with other developers and ask questions.

The Rewards

In addition to being more generous with LBC rewards this month, we're offering the following:

  • 500 LBC for anyone who submits their first accepted PR in October, regardless of whether you've submitted one before. This is separate from normal rewards for difficulty/effort/value.
  • A sweet T-shirt for anyone who submits 3 PRs.
  • A Lamborghini Aventador S for anyone who submits 800,000 accepted PRs.

Note: Typically these include actual coding PRs (Hacktoberfest), not text edits. Exceptions will be made for early contributes.

Brinck’s range of experience includes national political campaigns, crisis PR, SEO writing and optimization, digital marketing, RV sales, construction labor, and a variety of other strange and interesting pursuits (feel free to ask).

An inveterate music and media lover, Brinck remembers the pain of Kazaa and Limewire, and is seriously psyched about living in the future where it’s easy to compensate artists directly for their work.

He lives in Manchester, NH and can be regularly found lurking wherever the latest music is blaring.
